12/16/2009 - It's that time of year again, and the Parents' Committee has again stepped up with a wonderful spread of morale-boosting goodies during the exam period. "Exam Bake" is a twice-yearly and much anticipated gift from our parents, providing students with both calories and smiles to get them through the challenging winter and spring exam period. Thanks to all those who go out o...   View
12/16/2009 - Tonight following our last exam, we celebrated the service of Lessons & Carols and our annual Christmas Dinner. The Lessons & Carols service mixes readings from the Bible describing the Christmas story with favorite carols, from "Angels We Have Heard on High" to "Silent Night." The Christmas Dinner is all about eating turkey, wishing friends a great holiday season, and hea...   View
12/15/2009 - With the pressure of exams on the students this week, the adult community has stepped up to take over important jobs like pantry. Today, our great housekeeping staff took on the job, freeing student crews to go back and hit the books to prepare for their next exam.

We thank housekeeping as well as other departments, who have chipped in during this period in support...   View

12/13/2009 - Santa in Gallop!

Tis the season, and Santa didn't disappoint several faculty children who met up with the jolly old elf at the Holderness gymnasium this weekend. After establishing that everyone had been nice this year, requests and promises were made, and a good time was had by all. Above, the Eccleston's pose with Santa, who (in the words of Martha Macomber) "had ...   View
12/13/2009 - Decorating the Head's Christmas Tree!

About a month ago at a Thursday "brownie night" at our house, Jonathan Bass and the boys in the Hill dorms asked if they could have a chocolate fondue date night and decorate our Christmas tree. As we prepare for exams on Monday, we are also mindful of the holiday season. We take time in chapel and around campus to celebrate advent and the coming of Christmas as well as the beginning of Chanukah.

Several of our Jewish students have begun celebrating the eight days Chanukah on the steps of Hoit. Each evening they recite the blessings...   View
12/11/2009 - Last night, we celebrated the Hanging of the Greens service in the Chapel. Students and faculty sang carols and learned the stories behind many of our Christmas traditions, from evergreen trees to mistletoe.

The best part of the show was when Mr. McConnell - in full costume - appeared as Father Christmas and was soon surrounded by faculty children dressed as angels...   View

One of the joys of winter at Holderness is the opportunity to watch each other play sports. In particular it is great fun to race back and forth between hockey and basketball games at the Alfond Rink and Gallop Gymnasium. This afternoon we were fortunate to enjoy two basketball games and a hockey game: boys JV basketball played Cardigan Mtn. Schoo...   View
