9/22/2009 - Yesterday the third incarnation of the Norm Walker Golf Tournament took place at Turner Hill Golf Club. The tournament was well attended, with 16 foursomes heading out to play on a brilliant sunny afternoon. Emphasis was on camaraderie, but as golfers returned to a reception, eyes quickly and eagerly turned to the scoreboard.

Big winners of the day included Claudi...   View
9/21/2009 - This morning, our community came together to celebrate and remember the lives of Karen Pettitt and Sean Glew, who both sadly passed away after courageous battles with cancer over the summer. Both were fondly remembered by friends and family for their lives and examples as parents, teachers, spouses, and colleagues.

The service included readings, music, and comments ...   View
9/21/2009 - Rap Off in the Wallace Center!

Today at lunch in Weld everyone was talking about how two very talented ninth graders, Caleb Nungesser and Axi Berman, were going to have a "rap off" at 12:45 in lower Weld in the Wallace Center. When I went downstairs in Weld, there were fifty students from all grades gathered around Caleb and Axi. "Referee" Chandler Hoefle started ...   View
9/20/2009 - A Very Spirited Dance!

Last night I was in Mr. Ford's office in the Schoolhouse when we heard chanting from the different dorms on the way to the Dance in Hagerman. We heard the Rathbun Dorm singing "bun, bun, bun...!" and Webster Dorm singing, "We are Webster..." In addition every dorm had created a different uniform. Needless to say everyone enjoyed a very spirit...   View
9/19/2009 - What would it be like if - after 32 years living as a member of a middle-class white family - you were to suddenly discover that you were actually black? It's the premise of Michael Fosberg's play, Incognito, the first School Night of the 2009-2010 school year. The one-man show was a powerful and moving story of race, identity, family, and history. And it was a great way t...   View

9/18/2009 - Honor Code Chapel

Last night Academic Dean Peter Durnan gave an inspiring chapel talk about the importance of honor and trust at Holderness. He told us to look at page 19 of the handbook if we needed to be reminded of specifics; those details were not the focus of his talk. Rather his remarks were on the bigger picture on honor and trust at Holderness.

Mr. D...   View
9/18/2009 - A Very Cultural Day!

Today we enjoyed a couple rich cultural experiences. In assembly we were fortunate to hear artist Dana Velan reflect on her life and how it informed her powerful art. Among other experiences in her life, Ms. Velan fled Czechoslovakia in 1968 and moved to Canada, where she lives today. She also showed us a slide show of her art which is linked ...   View
9/17/2009 - Yesterday saw the Bulls in action for the first time, as several teams participated in scrimmages and one (boys JV1 soccer) took on its first real opponent of the season (the White Mountain School's varsity team). While the cobwebs left over from the long summer were still in evidence, all of the teams did well, showing off new skills, talking it up, and showing sportsmans...   View
9/17/2009 - Happy Birthday Xajaah and Colin!

Tonight at dinner Mr. Ford announced that to celebrate Xajaah Williams birthday he was going to have a "mixer" in his living room for all the ninth graders and any other students with a birthday today. Ten minutes later there were over 30 ninth graders in his living room singing happy birthday and "Lean on Me." In addition to most ...   View
