2/7/2009 - The lip synch - the last and biggest event in Winter Carnival - was held last night in a new venue, the Hagerman Auditorium. Dorms lined up music ranging from Grease to Britney Spears (and everywhere and anywhere in between) as well as costumes, from glow sticks taped to black body suits to cowboy outfits. It was a great time, and (generally) a real tribute to the creativi...   View
2/5/2009 - Last night's Barton Olympics provided entertainment, competition, amazement, and a great deal of laughter. Competitors from different dorms went head-to-head in three events: an M&M carry competition (carry an M&M in a spoon with your mouth, while crawling on all fours), a Saltine eating contest (in which the winner was the first to whistle a few bars of "Twinkle, Twinkle"...   View
2/5/2009 - And the hits just keep rolling here during Winter Carnival. At dinner tonight, many students came dressed as a favorite faculty member, taking on their appearance and (sometimes) their distinct mannerisms. It was all in good fun, and kept the spirit (and points) of Winter Carnival going right into the Dodgeball competition.

Above, the van der Lindes pose with their ...   View
2/4/2009 - Justin Freeman - a former national team skier and Olympian - was on hand for a private skate clinic with the Holderness Nordic team yesterday. Justin was on the USST from 2003 thru 2007 and competed in numerous international events including the World Championships and Olympics. He is currrently a member of the Holderness Nordic Club and trains regularly on our trails, and...   View
2/3/2009 - Winter Carnival Begins!

In winter we add a little spice to January and February by celebrating a week-long winter carnival. Every evening this week from 9:15-10:00 there are school-wide events with teams from every dorm.

Tonight's event was the Holderness Iditarod, which featured four "sled dogs" and two riders. Pictured here with snow and bodies flying was ...   View
2/2/2009 - Out Back is a program that takes our junior class (alongside several fantastic faculty guides) well outside of their collective and individual "comfort zones" to experience ten days of winter camping in the White Mountains. This year's program is coming up soon, and this past long weekend, several of our "fantastic faculty guides" strapped on the snowshoes and gear and sta...   View
1/31/2009 - It's trustee weekend, and our board is on campus to discuss ongoing initiatives and issues, but also to talk about how Holderness can plan responsibly and thoughtfully in the context of the current economic crisis. It's about making hard choices, yes, but it's also about finding opportunities. Discussions are underway regarding how we might become more efficient in how we ...   View
1/30/2009 - Part of our mission as a school is to "instill in all the resolve to work for the betterment of humankind and God's creation." For some of our students, the resolve is already there.

Such is the case with Hyun Jung "HJ" Chung '10, who gave a wonderful Chapel talk last night about the work she's been doing, helping North Korean refugees acclimate to their new lives ...   View
1/29/2009 - Walking through campus today - surrounded by buildings somehow shorter for the experience of yesterday's snowfall - it's hard to believe that graduation stands at just under four months away. Livermore Common, for instance, is at present a series of deep paths, with over two feet of snow sitting where all of the chairs for students, parents, dignitaries, and soon-to-be-gra...   View
1/28/2009 - It's mid-morning, and - along with a few inches of fresh snow - we've received word that all games and contests are cancelled for the day. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning, predicting a foot or more of the white stuff before it lets up. Drive safely out there.

As always, if you have questions about the status of games, feel free to call...   View
