1/26/2009 - Head's Holiday!

Last night at 9:40, I asked the Hill Dorms to come down and ring the chapel bells to announce a Head's Holiday. One problem, the bells were frozen! So we debated what to do, and they all decided to run around campus to announce the good news. Alas, many folks didn't believe them until I sent out the below email to all the faculty and students.

1/25/2009 - Meeting in the OB Cabin!

Last night as the temperatures plummeted below zero, a large group of students hiked half a mile through the woods on a trail lined with luminaries. The goal of the evening was to keep trainer Jeff Nadeau company. Mr. Nadeau spent the night in the OB cabin, and was pleased to have guests to help keep him warm. To help attract guests, Mr. N...   View
1/24/2009 - Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The contest begins in individual classrooms, and goes from there to a school-wide competition before moving on to regional, state, and finally the nationals in Washington, DC.

Having finished work at the classroom level, we were ready ...   View
1/23/2009 - In addition to Mr. and Mrs. Weymouth, Holderness was also represented at the Inauguration by President of the Board of Trustees and Bishop of New Hampshire the Right Rev. Gene Robinson, Mrs. Macomber, Taylor Caggiula '09, James Conklin '09, and Emily Lockwood '99 (among many, many others, we're sure).

1/23/2009 - Monday's Martin Luther King Day discussions about hateful language continue to affect thinking and spark conversations around campus. For some, it's tempting to distance oneself (and our community) from the realities presented during the morning program. Mr. Barton, in his chapel talk last night, helped drive home the points made on Monday, forcing us to confront not only ...   View
1/22/2009 - To say it's been cold in these here parts over the past week would be an understatement. The sub-zero temperatures have caused practices to be cancelled and pipes all over campus to freeze.

The most notable example of pipes freezing happened during our Martin Luther King celebration, when the pipes onstage in Hagerman froze, causing us to move the program to Chapel...   View
1/21/2009 - Yesterday, nearly 100 students and faculty came to watch the inauguration in the Hagerman auditorium. It was the final act in a process we've been following for several months, as the two front-runners made their case to the world and, through several guests at assemblies and elsewhere, to the faculty and students at Holderness. Whatever your political bent, it was wonderf...   View
1/21/2009 - Advisor-advisee dinners are an opportunity for advisors and advisees to come together and talk about issues affecting their dorm, group, or the school in general. Dinner is usually relaxed and takes place in advisors' apartments or in familiar places around campus.

1/20/2009 - If there was one thing we took away from yesterday's workshops, it is that if you're going to change school culture, it needs to start with the student body. And our students yesterday were up to the challenge.

Following our Chapel service and a talk by Steve Wessler of the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence, it was our students who stepped forward. They re...   View
1/20/2009 - Yesterday, Bishop of New Hampshire and President of the Holderness School Board of Trustees Gene Robinson opened the first event of the Inauguration at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC. His prayer was for both the nation and President Obama as he took office.
