1/12/2009 - The former Bishop of New Hampshire and honorary trustee the Rt. Rev. Douglas Theuner gave us a hand at this morning's Chapel, performing the Eucharist and presenting another one of his articulate, thoughtful sermons. He spoke about the importance of Ephiphany, which in Eastern Orthodox churches marks the celebration of Jesus' baptism, when Jesus became "one of us."

1/11/2009 - White Out Dance!

The first weekend of the new year always features the "White Out Dance." Everyone gets dressed up in a variety of white clothes, and the black lights make everyone glow (something that doesn't come through in the photos). This year the students moved the White Out Dance into lower Weld, and over 150 students fit into a relatively small space. The e...   View
1/10/2009 - Yesterday's assembly included a big surprise, courtesy of our resident prankster, Mr. Lockwood.

At the end of yesterday's assembly, Mr. Peck introduced the school to the fact that Mr. Lockwood would be taking part in the Chair Program next year, an opportunity given to experienced faculty on a rotating basis for professional development and reflection. As such, he ...   View
1/9/2009 - Last night, we celebrated the third opening of the year in the Edwards Art Gallery, this time featuring the photography, printmaking, and video work of German-born artist Henrieke Strecker. While she has shown frequently in Europe, this is her first solo show in the United States.

Students and faculty assembled after dinner last night to see the beautiful pieces, a...   View
1/8/2009 - It wasn't until a few hours ago that we came out from under the over 24-hour "Winter Storm Watch" issued by the National Weather Service. As a result of the weather, yesterday's games, matches, and events were canceled, including the home Lakes Region Nordic event.

That didn't keep the Nordic team off our trails, however, as they did their own time trial as part of...   View
1/7/2009 - Welcome to Holderness, Peter Amerman!

Yesterday, I enjoyed the opportunity to sit in Peter Amerman's first class at Holderness. Peter will be the acting Chaplain the second half of this year (covering for Mr. Weymouth), and will be teaching two theology classes and one Bible class. In our Bible class, Mr. Amerman gave an overview of the class and asked students to s...   View
1/6/2009 - "There's often a large difference between intention and impact, and this is a key concept for students to understand, and for respectful communities to embrace. An off-hand comment intended as a joke can have a lasting and dramatic impact on someone else." Stephen Wessler, the Executive Director of the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence (CPHV), and author of The...   View
1/5/2009 - Head of School Phil Peck opened the new calendar year with a Chapel address to the assembled faculty and staff regarding the current economic crisis and its possible effect on Holderness. His comments in many ways echoed those shared in a recent Headmaster's Newsletter, sent out to the greater Holderness community several weeks ago. They spoke to the concern and thoughtful...   View
12/29/2008 - During vacation many of our athletes and coaches are busy with tournaments and competitions. In addition to our present athletes, many of our alumni have been very active this holiday season as well.

This past weekend several of us went to UNH to watch Greg Johnson '05 and his Hofstra team defeat UNH in a close game. In addition to the Pecks, Greg's fans included, ...   View
