10/13/2008 - Happy Thanksgiving Today was Canadian Thanksgiving and yesterday the Cirone Family hosted many students to celebrate the national holiday over a fantastic turkey dinner. This gave many of the Canadian students a slice of home. The company was great and the food, cooked by Mrs. Cirone, was even better. Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Cirone for this wonderful event. ... 10/11/2008 - In the words of Dave Lockwood, "there are four components of a good prank - it's a surprise, it involves planning, nobody is hurt or offended, and it's funny." These all came together in a prank courtesy of the same Dave Lockwood yesterday, as faculty found OSHA badges in their mailboxes, with a note to be sure to wear it "during classroom hours." A few victims (and the pe... View |

10/10/2008 - Last night's chapel featured Leeli Bonney, who spoke about her project to send fleece jackets to the children of Nepal. It's a simple and small thing, really, but can make a big difference in the lives of children. She showed slides of the people and beautiful country of Nepal, and shared her experiences through this project. Amelia Simmons '09 and Janice Pedrin-Nielson wi... View |

10/10/2008 - Today, we took the all-school photo, a picture of our senior class, and one of the "lifers" (4-year students). We also joined in a wonderful project initiated by Kevin Ramos-Glew, brother to Sean Glew, a faculty member at Holderness. Mr. Glew - father, husband, teacher, coach, dorm parent, and great guy - was recently diagnosed with cancer. The photo we took will be placed... View |

10/9/2008 - Holderness is a place where everyone knows your name... and (seemingly) your birthday. Our email Bulletin Board is constantly full of birthday wishes, an occasional announcement is made at dinner or assembly, and the dining hall goes out of its way to celebrate student birthdays on a monthly basis with a big cake. Once in awhile, these recognitions spill over into other ar... View |

10/8/2008 - Our new Strategic Plan asks us as a school to find ways to promote connection across our academic curriculum as well as encourage higher-order thinking skills in our students. In support of these goals (and as part of an ongoing series of opportunities for departments to share), science department chair Randy Houseman presented a workshop on "Thinking and Writing Like a Sc... 10/7/2008 - Fall is a beautiful time on campus, as the reds and yellows of the maples serve to frame our buildings in color while the crisp air puts everything in better focus. Well, okay, it's not always that fun for the Outdoor Crew, some of whom see the fall as an endless series of early morning leaf raking adventures. Above, Charlotte O'Leary '11, Madde Burnham '11, Mark Finnegan ... View |

10/6/2008 - This morning, the school headed up the trails behind the athletic fields to the Outdoor Chapel. The chapel was constructed in the early nineties as a senior project, and commands a beautiful view of the woods and surrounding mountains. Seated together on mats and informal benches, we listened to Native American readings, quotes from Thoreau, and Mr. Barton's talk about liv... View |

10/4/2008 - Last night, Holderness School had the pleasure of hosting Papa Grows Funk on the stage of the Hagerman auditorium. The self-described "funk-jam band" didn't even finish the first song before half the school was up on stage with them, dancing and enjoying the groove from "The Big Easy." Thanks to them for a great show, and to Mr. Lockwood for bringing them up. ... View |

10/3/2008 - On Wednesday, faculty member and proud mother Kathryn Field took her daughter Amelia Simmons '09 down to the Harvard Club in Boston for a breakfast given for high school Harvard Book Award winners. The award is given annually at Holderness to "the student in the next to last year whom the Head of School, after consulting with the faculty and the student's classmates, shall... View |
