10/2/2008 - Athletics plays an important role at Holderness, with each student required to play sports during the school year. With a variety of levels available in most sports, participation is our primary goal. Yesterday, the majority of our teams were on the road, but JV football put on a great show at home, playing a great game against the Mount Washington Wolves. Check out AD Lan...   View
10/1/2008 - JV2 Boys Soccer and Coach Kendall took a break from their busy practice schedule yesterday to help Jim Brewer, former Holderness coach and faculty member. Over the course of just over an hour, they stacked two and a half cords of wood. Mr. Brewer said, "When they left, the barn had been swept, the tarps folded, the wood-site raked and all the residual kulch transported to ...   View
9/30/2008 - The tradition of periodically having a candlelight dinner was given new meaning in the new dining room. In addition to candles we enjoyed an opening Roshashana prayer by Evan Marcus and live music from Mr. Lockwood. Thanks to Laney, Justin, Cody and the seniors for keeping the tradition alive. Pictured here at Ms. Whitaker's table are Cody Bohonnon, Hannah Carr, BK Chun, J...   View
9/29/2008 - On Sunday, September 28, over 100 friends and members of the Hagerman family came together in the Chapel of the Holy Cross to celebrate the life of Donald C. Hagerman, former headmaster at Holderness School, who passed away last spring. The service was deeply touching, as different speakers reflected on this giant of a man as a headmaster, a mentor, a grandfather, a father...   View
9/27/2008 - Some schools use formal hymns as the basis of their official school song. Holderness School - at the direction of Music Maestro David Lockwood - boasts "Quinn the Eskimo" as its official, unofficial school song. Mr. Lockwood continued the tradition at this Friday's assembly, getting everyone up to join in the chorus: "Come all without, come all within; you'll not see nothi...   View

9/26/2008 - As part of our strategic planning, yesterday the board Finance Committee and a group of school administrators met to begin planning for the financial future of Holderness. We set this meeting up several months ago, but the timing seemed especially appropriate in light of recent events. Business manager Peter Hendel did a brilliant job putting together fifteen-year projecti...   View
9/25/2008 - Sustainability is an important element of our Strategic Plan, and Holderness has hired the Jordan Institute, a NH non-profit, to help us understand our current energy consumption patterns and recommend changes that would help us become more environmentally friendly and efficient in the future. To that end, a group toured campus yesterday, making note of current systems in ...   View
9/24/2008 - One of the reasons we created a longer period of time after dinner (an hour) was to encourage clubs to be active. We have a math club, the Green Team, the Spanish Club, French Club, and even a Yoga Club. Tonight was the first active meeting of the Yoga club, which took place in the basement of our house. It seemed like a great time was enjoyed by all, especially the two bo...   View
9/23/2008 - A tidepool served as inspiration for the characters in John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, so why not use it as inspiration for an English class? Yesterday morning, Ms. Brewer's sophomores, currently studying Steinbeck's classic, made the trek to the Maine seacoast to see the models behind characters such as Doc and Lee Chong. They returned with some wet clothes, new adventures,...   View
