9/22/2008 - This morning's chapel featured our first Eucharist service of the year, and visiting chaplain Randy Dales - former faculty member and current trustee - took us through the program. Today was as much about welcoming everyone to the table as it was about explaining the sacrament, its history, its form, and its meaning....   View
9/20/2008 - On Saturday evening there was a trip to Funspot, movies played on the big screen in Hagerman, and food was provided by a late evening barbecue. On Sunday many students and faculty wore white to honor the international day of peace. Following a delicious brunch students tie-dyed t-shirts on the quad. In addition ten students joined Mr. Flinders and Mr. Frei to cut and deliv...   View
9/19/2008 - After grabbing a quick bite at the barbecue last night, four vans full of Holderness fans drove to New Hampton to cheer on the field hockey team. On the sidelines the Holderness fans nearly outnumbered the home crowd! In a very close game won by Holderness in overtime, the fan support certainly helped. Pictured here are four enthusiastic "bulls:" Cassie Hecker, Emery Durna...   View
9/18/2008 - On alternate nights we have "intervisitation" on the boys' and the girls' sides, which means the dorms can have visitors of the opposite sex for 45 minutes after dinner. The Macomber's Dorm had a new twist on intervisitation last night when the chocolate fondue fountain came out and every member of the Mac Dorm invited a date for her roommate. It made for a gathering of 28...   View
9/18/2008 - Tonight in chapel we listened to a sacred Islamic song/prayer honoring Ramadan. Mr. Barton and Ms. Fischer shared reflections about Ramadan, which in some ways equates to the month of Lent in the Christian Calendar. We were honored to have Abdallah Alireza share why the month of Ramadan is so meaningful for him personally. Pictured here are Abdallah and his cousin Tarik ri...   View
9/17/2008 - Tonight after dinner, Ms. Nielson met with the students who are fulfilling their service requirement through working at Whole Village (a Grafton County center for needy families), doing "meals for many," and students collecting firewood for local families with Mr. Flinders. These students will be putting in approximately 40 hours to help families in the community. Pictured...   View
9/16/2008 - Thanks to the recent renovation of Weld Hall - and the larger dining area - we've been excited this year to welcome families back to family-style meals. There are several young faculty children on campus this year whose appearance at dinner inevitably brings a smile to students' faces. What's great is that our students often return the favor. Above, a smiling Linden van de...   View
9/15/2008 - This morning, Mr. Barton provided an overview of the history of Holderness School to the new students in the context of Trinity Chapel, the oldest of the buildings on campus, and the site of the school's opening sermon. He tied the beginnings of the school to a new beginning for these students, asking them to be mindful of the past when writing their own future chapter of ...   View
9/14/2008 - In addition to the Chuseok celebration Saturday night, the weather cleared and we were able to watch a "movie on the quad." Blankets and couches were spread around the South Campus Quad to watch "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." To add to the movie, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs were served, and we rented a large popcorn machine. Pictured here are five ladies enjoying popcorn ...   View
9/13/2008 - Last night we enjoyed the first gallery opening of the year, featuring work by artists Alex Kanevsky and Hollis Heichemer. After dinner over a hundred students, faculty, and townsfolks made their way to the gallery. We were moved by Kanevsky's stunning seascapes of Ireland and his fascinating etchings. Heichemer's eclectic mix of colorful oil paintings were equally moving....   View
